The number of COVID-19 cases in Ohio continues to reach levels not seen in several months.
The Ohio Department of Health on Wednesday reported 4,600 new cases of COVID-19 in the state. It is the largest since 4,874 cases were reported on Jan.29 – almost seven months ago.
Also for the first time since January 30, the state has had two consecutive days with COVID-19 cases exceeding 4,000. There were 4,117 cases reported on Tuesday.
The state has recorded a streak of at least 4,000 daily cases reported between November 3, 2020 and January 30. The only other day since then with at least 4,000 daily cases was February 4 with 4,120 through Tuesday and Wednesday.
The state reported 495 cases on July 25, which means the number has increased nearly 10 times in a month.
Wednesday was the 16th day in a row that Ohio surpassed 1,800 daily COVID-19 cases. This includes nine who have had more than 3,000 cases and the last two exceeding 4,000 cases each.
The 4,600 new COVID-19 cases reported on Wednesday are up from the daily average of 2,739 for the past 21 days, according to the ODH.
Of those new cases on Wednesday, 167 were in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties combined.
Six weeks ago, the state as a whole averaged about 260 cases per day.
As of Wednesday, the state had a total of 1,192,478 COVID-19 cases, including 1,115,261 presumed recovered.
The ODH typically provides information on deaths on Tuesdays and Fridays. A total of 20,729 deaths from COVID-19 were reported on Tuesday.
Mahoning County had 23,871 total cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday with 22,297 presumed cured and 617 deaths.
Trumbull County had 17,672 cases of COVID-19 in total as of Wednesday with 16,493 presumed cured and 494 deaths.
Columbiana County had a total of 9,897 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday with 9,086 presumed cured and 236 deaths.
VACCINATION
There were 6,013,668 people, 51.45% of the state’s population, who had at least started getting vaccinated by 6 a.m. on Wednesday, including 11,926 in the previous 24 hours, according to the ODH. .
In Mahoning County, 49.83 percent of the population (113,961 people) had received at least one dose with 47.63 percent of the population in Trumbull County (94,300 people) and 40.28 percent in Columbiana County (41,035 people) as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to the ODH.
There were 5,555,846 people, 47.53 percent of the state’s population, who completed immunizations at 6 a.m. Wednesday, including 10,345 in the previous 24 hours.
In Mahoning County, 45.95% of the population (105,081 people) had completed the process and 43.61% of the population of Trumbull (86,340 people) and 37.24% of the population of Columbiana (37,943 people) did so at 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
