Nordstrom Rack, a popular spot with bargain hunters, will close its location in the SoMa district of San Francisco on October 1, the retailer said.

The 42,000 square foot store, where $ 200 worth of jeans can be purchased for $ 100, opened in 2001 in a mall at 555 Ninth St. owned by Acadia Realty Trust.

The retailer’s downtown Nordstrom Rack on Market Street and the neighboring Nordstrom full line at Westfield Mall will remain open.

“Our market strategy allows us to see how we are best positioned to meet the needs of our customers in a market, rather than looking at individual stores,” a spokesperson for the Seattle-based company said in a statement. . “This approach means we can combine our digital and physical assets to provide customers with increased product selection, improved delivery speed and increased convenience. We believe we are better able to serve customers in this market by focusing on our locations near Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack. , as well as online. “

While Nordstrom closed 16 of its full stores across the country in response to the COVID pandemic last year, the company said it was unusual to close Nordstrom Rack outlets, which offer discounts of up to ‘70% off Nordstrom prices on clothing and footwear for men and women.

“Closing Rack stores is not something we do that often,” a spokesperson wrote in an email. “We have only closed nine since 1995, and in the same time frame, we have opened 245.”

Nordstrom said it will try to place SoMa site employees in new roles within the company.
