As the coronavirus spread across the United States last month, health officials urged people to refrain from traveling to see friends and family during the Thanksgiving holiday. But data shows that millions of Americans have ignored those calls.
Although air travel was much lower than in previous years, airports still reported some of their busiest days since the start of the pandemic. The US Transportation Security Administration said it had screened more than one million passengers on several days during the holiday period.
Experts have warned that the United States could see a “skyrocket” in Covid-19 cases as a result, while the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that even a small number of infected travelers could result in hundreds of thousands of new infections.
Meanwhile, vehicle trips increased around Thanksgiving, peaking about 5% lower than last year, according to transportation analytics firm Streetlight Data.
Company founder Laura Schewel told The Associated Press that it showed that “people were less willing to change their behavior than on any other day during the pandemic”.
Officials have made similar calls for people to avoid travel during the Christmas and New Years period, as hospital admissions reach record levels.
