On the occasion of the 18th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, NASA astronauts paid tribute to the heroes who risked their lives to save lives that day by sending a special message sent from the US. space.
"Tribute to the brave @FDNY officials Thank you for your service, we remember your fallen comrades," tweeted NASA Expedition 60 astronaut Drew Morgan from the Space Station international. "Your flag and patch are proudly circling the Earth aboard the @Space_Station! #NeverForget."
Morgan shared pictures of a New York City Fire Department (FDNY) coat of arms floating in the dome window with a view of the Earth in the background, as well a photo of himself with a FDNY flag mounted inside the laboratory in orbit.

NASA also commemorated the dark anniversary of Earth by sharing a recent photo of Manhattan captured from space. NASA astronaut Christina Koch captured the photo below from the International Space Station while she was flying over the area on August 19, 2019.

"Every year we take a break and never forget," NASA officials said in a statement. "In addition to remembering and honoring the dead Americans that day, NASA also helped FEMA in New York in the days that followed and remembered the victims by providing flags to their families aboard the Space Shuttle. "
