National security advisers from across the Alliance met in Brussels on Thursday, October 7, 2021 to review progress in key areas, including strengthening deterrence and defense, technological innovation and responding to change climate. “Today’s meeting was an important step towards the NATO summit in Madrid next year, where we will continue our military and political adaptation,” the NATO Secretary General told the ‘outcome of the meeting.

Mr Stoltenberg said the national security advisers discussed NATO’s next official strategy document, its “strategic concept” which will be adopted at the summit. Regarding Afghanistan, the Secretary General reiterated the need for NATO to do its part to help preserve the gains in the fight against terrorism. He added that the discussions also focused on the lessons that can be learned from the Alliance’s 18 years of engagement in Afghanistan.

Turning to the recent AUKUS agreement which led to disagreements between certain Allies, the Secretary General underlined the need for cohesion around the strategic objectives of the Alliance. “As allies, we don’t always agree on everything, all the time. But we never lose sight of the big picture ”, said Mr Stoltenberg. “In an era of heightened global competition, Europe and North America must continue to stand together within NATO. “
