AHMEDABAD: Two children died in Gujarat for unknown reasons, prompting a government investigation to determine whether deaths are related to measles and rubella vaccination for which a campaign is underway, said one official on Tuesday.

While the families of the deceased alleged that the deaths were due to "adverse reactions" caused by the vaccination, the health authorities dismissed it.

The dead were identified as Dimple Maheswari (13) and Mukesh Ninama (7), respectively from the districts of Kutch and Aravlli.

The health department ordered an investigation into the death of Dimple Maheshwari in the village of Khirsara, said a senior officer, while ruling out any link between vaccination and the girl's death.

According to the police, Maheshwari has suddenly collapsed at her home. She was rushed to a health center in Naliya City, where doctors said she was dead, a police official in Kothara said.

The police recorded a case of accidental death.

"The girl's family members claimed that she died because of the adverse effects of the MR vaccine given to her a few days ago. We sent the body for an autopsy in order to determine the exact cause of death "the official said.

The Gujarat government launched a nationwide vaccination campaign on July 16 to protect children aged nine months to 15 years against measles and rubella.

Kutch Pankaj Kumar Pandey Regional Health Officer (OHDO) said a three-member team had been formed to probe Maheshwari's death.

Pandey, however, ruled out the possibility of a link between vaccination and the death of the girl.

"More than 100 children from this village received the vaccine, but if there was a problem with the vaccine, it could have affected all these children, but this is not the case, we sent a team of three members to investigate the death of the girl, "he said.

The OHDO indicated that there was a gap of almost five days since the administration of the vaccine to Maheshwari on July 19 and his death.
"If there had been a problem with the vaccine, the adverse effects would have been observed that day: more than a million children in Kutch district were covered up to 1 year ago. now, "he said.

On July 22, Ninama, a grade 2 student from Bhiloda taluka in the seven-year-old Arvalli district, died four days after the administration of the vaccine, according to police.

According to a complaint registered by the police station of Bhiloda, the boy died after suffering from an epileptic seizure.

"The boy received the MR vaccine four days before his death, family members said the vaccine was responsible for his death and we are waiting for the post-mortem report to find out the exact cause of death.", said the inspector AS Patel.

Bhiloda CDHO Amarnath Verma said that only about thirty children from Bhiloda taluka had become ill after receiving the MR vaccine.

However, Verma argued that the vaccine can not be blamed for adverse health conditions.

"This vaccine causes slight effects because the body reacts to it, but there are no harmful effects of this vaccine, it is also possible that the children have become ill because of the diseases seasonal, already given the discharge after the primary treatment, "said Verma.

Since the vaccination campaign was launched, reports have been received from various parts of the state about its possible adverse effects.

However, state authorities have argued that the vaccine is safe and there is no need to panic.

"We have received cases from some districts, but this can not be considered the adverse effect of the vaccine: sometimes children feel uncomfortable because of the tension, otherwise it "There is no need to panic … sure," said health commissioner Gujarat Jayanti Ravi.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani also pointed out that the vaccine was safe for children.

"This vaccine was administered to children Lakhs up to now, but if it was not good, they could all have been affected, but it's not the case sick after taking this vaccine, "said the chief minister.
