GURUGRAM: Sixty-seven peabads were released into their habitat on Sunday, after being successfully treated for virulent Newcastle disease (VND).

They were among more than 90 peabads who were admitted to the temporary medical facility established in Bhondsi, after the outbreak of the disease on June 1. Twenty-two of the birds admitted died.

"We have released the peabads that have been successfully treated, after obtaining the necessary permission to do so.There are still some birds in the establishment.Their condition is stable and they will soon be released too. besides, there has been no report of peabad deaths today, so it is safe to release the birds, "said Sunder Shyam, district wildlife officer, Gurugram.

In the last month, about 30 peabads died after being infected with the virus. District authorities ordered the vaccination of all poultry in the city. More than 50,000 poultry were vaccinated. Cases have been reported in three villages – Bhondsi, Akhlimpur and Tikli. "Most of the peabads had symptoms such as torsion of the head and neck, swelling of the eyes, stiffness of the body and opacified vision.The infected birds were kept under observation after confirmation of the epidemic by the authorities", said Anil Gandas, a wildlife enthusiast, who saved many peabads throughout the city.

Listed as a reportable disease under the Infectious and Contagious Animal Diseases and Control Act, 2009, MRV is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease that can affect wild birds and poultry . The virus is found in respiratory trash and feces, and it can cause serious illness and death in birds. Although the disease does not spread to humans, those living near infected birds may have mild conjunctivitis or slight symptoms resembling fever.
