A mother of three revealed a tragic incident three years after her 12-month-old daughter broke her leg. Mom and daughter were going down the slide together when the incident occurred.
A tragedy in the park
In September 2015, Heather Clare and her twins, Meadow and Matthew, were at Heckscher Park in Huntington, New York, for a day of fun and enjoyment. Heather took Mattew on a 10-foot slide and after they were done, Heather took Meadow there too.
After placing Meadow on her lap, the two went down the same slide, and Heather noticed in the middle of the slide that Meadow's foot was wedged between her and the toboggan.
Heather's husband captured the moment and the photo was shared on Heather's social media. In the photo, Meadow's right leg is stuck between the slide and Heather and she was bent in the opposite direction. Heather and her daughter both smiled on the picture because they seemed to ignore what had happened.
"When we went down to the bottom of the slide, she was crying a lot, it was terrible, especially since I had the impression of having put her in this position, it was completely avoidable, "said Heather. The accident took place three days after Meadow took his first steps.
Meadow was rushed to the emergency room where the doctors informed Heather and her husband that Meadow had fractured his shin and fibula in his right leg. Meadow was to spend the next four weeks wearing a pink plaster on her right leg.
Heather's arguments
Heather has also been informed by doctors who have treated her daughter that sliding injuries are quite common in children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 350,000 children under the age of six were injured on toboggans in the United States between the years 2002-2015.
Toddlers aged 12 to 23 months had the highest percentage of injuries, the majority of them being fractured legs.
The information was collected from the study conducted in 2017.
Heather said Meadow was fully recovered from his injury despite concerns that her injury would cause her leg to grow shorter than the other one that was not injured. Heather continues to share her daughter's story and advises parents not to be on the slides with their children. His Facebook photo received more than 88,000 actions and 10,000 reactions.
