Comparison of specs: Can the BMW G 310 R compete with competitors like Duke 390 or Yamaha R3?

With the recent launch in India of G 310 R siblings in India, competition in the performance bikes market has hardened. The highlight of the launch was the G 310 GS. The BMW G 310 GS is an ADV, which many motorcycle enthusiasts have been waiting for.

We have the Kawasaki Versys X 300, but at Rs 4.69 lakh, compare it to the BMW seems useless. KTM has announced the arrival of the KTM 390 Adventure, and with KTM's pricing strategy, we are pretty sure that it will be cheaper. However, we will have to wait until the bike is able to compare the two.

Right now, let's focus on BMW's naked street bike, the G 310 R. It competes with KTM Duke 390, Yamaha YZF-R3, Kawasaki Ninja 300, TVS Apache RR310 and Benelli TNT 300. The BMW is manufactured in Hosur's factory of TVS and shares its engine with the Apache RR310. It is therefore not surprising that most engine numbers are the same. The difference comes in the electronics. The Apache ECU is mapped by TVS while the G 310 R is made by BMW. While everything else remains the same, the different cards result in a different driving experience.

All bikes are paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. While the Duke and the Ninja have the technology of slipper clutch, the other bikes on our list do not. Braking power comes from a 300mm disc at the front and a 240mm disc at the rear. This is not the biggest of the lot but not the smallest either and we think it should handle emergency braking well. ABS is standard on all but the Benelli TNT 300.

In terms of seat height, the BMW G 310 R is not great. At 785 mm, it is very short either, but it will undoubtedly appeal to the little ones. The Benelli and Kawasaki have similar seat heights. The Duke in this respect is an extremely large bike at 830 mm while the Apache falls right next to the Duke at 810 mm.

BMW has everything else to beat when it comes to weight. With a curb weight of 158.5 kg, it is the lightest bike on our list, the Benelli being the heaviest.

Even now, the KTM is our best competitor in terms of value for money. Of course, the Apache RR310 is the cheapest of the lot, but the KTM promises a lot more power for a bit more. Kawasaki has also recently announced a price cut for the Ninja 300 which is a bit cheaper than the BMW G 310 R which sells for Rs 2.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
