Honor earlier this year introduced the "premium design" to the budget segment with Honor 9 Lite, a phone with quad cameras, FullView screen and 2.5D glbad at the back and front. Almost six months later, Honor launched a new variant of the model – Honor 9N.
Just like the predecessor, the new Honor phone puts a lot on the design and includes the notch display. The Honor 9N is not a very big upgrade compared to the Honor 9 Lite in terms of specs, but there are some subtle changes. For example, Honor 9N comes with Kirin 659 SoC which is the same processor as the old Honor 7X and Honor 9i
Honor 9 Lite came with an awesome design but the overall performance was not up to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 tastes of top-selling. We used the newest Honor 9N as our main smartphone for quite some time. Let's see how Honor 9N fees.
Design
The first thing you will notice about Honor phones is the uniqueness of the design department. The good thing is that the company leverages its design expertise for its budget portfolio. Honor 9N is no exception. Offering a high-end look, the phone has a reflective glbad back panel and offers more color options than its predecessor.
In addition to black and sapphire blue, the smartphone comes in two pretty colors: blue. The Honor 9N front looks exactly like the Honor 10 with its notch and 19: 9 format.
Structurally, the smartphone is quite light and easy to hold. The fingerprint sensor and controls like the volume and power keys are at your fingertips, even for someone with a small hand like mine.

Camera
Honor 9 Lite was and still is one of the few phones to offer dual cameras in front and back. But as we mentioned in our review, the quality of the camera on the Honor 9 Lite was a mixed bag. For the new Honor 9N, the company has removed the quad-camera configuration and has a single front camera that is a 16-megapixel sensor.
The smartphone delivers nice selfies thanks to its beautifying meter. There is an animated image inspired by the iPhone that "moves" when you tap on the photo. It also comes with a LED light for low-light selfies that works very well. It's better with the level of embellishment lowered as the artificial light already gives an extra glow.

Honor 9N has the same dual camera configuration at the back as the Honor 9 Lite which is a combination of 13 megapixel and 2 megapixel camera. The photos taken in full light and in the interior were quite impressive with good color reproduction and details intact. Photography in low light is a difficult feat to achieve, and Honor 9N does not excel in this department either. The effect of depth, however, works better than on Honor 9 Lite.

Performance
In terms of performance, the experience was much better than the Honor 9 Lite. The phone handles everyday and regular tasks like calls, chat, video streaming and social applications with ease. There was however a problem with the software with the Android Oreo feature as the smart answer that was not working properly.
Honor 9N easily handles graphic games. We have not encountered any problem playing games like PUBG. There were some heating problems encountered after a few minutes of video recording and games. Fortunately, the phone does not overheat at an uncomfortable level.
The backup battery on Honor 9N is about the same as the Honor 9 Lite. And it is not positive. In case of medium to high usage, the phone will ask you to recharge it twice a day. We saw better battery performance on phones like Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1.
Verdict
With a price starting at Rs 11,999, Honor 9N competes with Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1. The phone does not really outperform Redmi Note 5 in terms of overall performance and battery backup, but has its own USPs – camera and high-end design. If you are looking for a phone that is more beautiful, Honor 9N deserves to be considered. But performance and battery life are things you can not compromise, Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro are our best recommendation.
