This study, presented at the 2018 Canadian Cardiovascular Congress (CCC) in Toronto, was designed to determine the number of breaks and the time required to spend 770 kilocalories (kcal).

"Our study shows that cardiac patients must discontinue sedentary lifestyles every 20 minutes by a light physical activity of 7 minutes," said study author, Ailar Ramadi, of the University of California. Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.
"Simple activities such as getting up and walking at a casual pace will require more than 770 kcal per day if done with this frequency and duration," added Ramadi.
The study recruited 132 patients with coronary artery disease. The average age was 63 years old and 77% were men.
Participants wore an activity monitor armband 22 hours a day on average for five days.
The activity monitor recorded the amount of energy spent during breaks due to inactivity, the duration of inactivity, the number and duration of breaks.
"There is a lot of evidence now that sitting for long periods of time is bad for you," Ramadi said.
"Our study suggests that, during each hour of the session, cardiac patients should take three breaks that total 21 minutes of light physical activity, or 770 kcal per day, an amount badociated with a risk of premature death lower, "added Ramadi.
