The Inland Navigation Authority (IWAI) is the first Indian container ship on the Ganga between Kolkata and Varanasi, making cargo movement economical and environmentally friendly

"This will be a landmark event in the history of the inland waterway transport sector in India.This will be an additional testament for the waterways as a preferred mode of transport for cargo owners because of its profitability and respect for the environment, "said a statement from the Indian Inland Waterways Authority under the Ministry of Navigation.

The cargo to be transported belongs to the giant of food and drink PepsiCo. Sixteen containers will be transported from Kolkata to Varanasi by the Ganga River (National Waterway No. 1).

Secretary (expedition) Shri Gopal Krishna, accompanied by IWAI President, Shri Pravir Pandey, and other senior government officials will report the ship landing shipment in the presence of representatives of PepsiCo.

"PepsiCo (India) will move 16 containers – the equivalent of 16 loads of trucks – filled with food and snacks in the MV RN Tagore ship that will reach Varanasi in 9 to 10 days," the statement said.

Missionary RN Tagore will make his return trip with IFFCO fertilizers, which will be purchased at his Phulpur plant near Allahabad. in Varanasi (1,390 km) with technical and financial badistance from the World Bank for an estimated cost of 5,369 crore. The project would allow the commercial navigation of ships with a capacity of 1,500 to 2,000 DWT.
