Katrina Kaif may have been in the industry for over 15 years, but her choices have changed dramatically over the past year. It's no longer the same Kat: she is more focused and more eager to do a great job. There is also a huge change in her way of seeing things over the last two years, she admits as we meet her for a brief discussion. The Bharat trailer, released three days ago, received a resounding public response, but it's Katrina Kaif, a thief of scenes. His dialogue has improved and his prowess has progressively increased. Tell him that and she flashes a million dollar smile. On this note, we begin our conversation where she discusses not only her role in Bharat but also reveals what has suddenly changed in her. To her …
You have been immensely praised for your performance in Zero. Now, even for Bharat, you have received a positive response. How do you see the change in audience perception towards you?
It's amazing actually. I believe that every actor needs this statement from the public. This is the most inspiring work phase I have been in. I am inspired to work harder every day. I find a lot of affirmation in all this course of Bharat. I really liked playing the character here. Even in Zero, I loved the whole process of making a movie. I do not know, but I'm discovering new ways to connect and do more with what I'm trying to do at work.

Many people think that something suddenly changed in you.
It's something that does not change overnight, but it's a slow change when you start to focus more on what you do and understand yourself a little better. A little more internalization really helps – this has helped me understand who I am, how I want to work, where I am in relation to work and if that is what I am going to do . Do I really have to leave a part of me on the screen? I do not think this work is entirely representative of who I am, and now I have to start bringing who I am to my work. This does not mean that I have to influence or change the characters I play. I will do it on paper. But now, I have to bring a little more. And who I am today is not what I was four years ago. I am not the same person. This may be the change that everyone notices in me.
There was a time when people thought that diction was a problem. But everyone loves your dialogue in the trailer.
I have always worked with pbadion and dedication. I would work much harder if I could feel that the public did not like it that way. I have been very focused throughout my career. But in my last two films (Bharat and Zero), I decided that if that were not enough, I will devote more time and effort to improving what I already do. I have just spent a lot more hours continuously for these two projects. There is no other elegant way to say it. I also believe that if you spend many hours, you will certainly see the results.
Years ago, a choreographer declared that you were not a great dancer. Today, you are the best we have.
(smiles) Yes, I really feel like it's in me. I think we, as people, accept too many opinions. We are so logical about everything else, but then, when it comes to opinions, our brains escape and we lose all that. We think the achha said I could not do it, so I probably could not. It's so easy to convince another person to be locked in a box. It's the easiest thing to get another person to think that they can only do one thing. It's the same with me, even today. After so many years in this business, I am still affected. One day, I realized that one person, two people or even a hundred opinions did not do things a fact. And sometimes, even if they are a fact at that time, as you told me about my diction, it is not an immutable fact. So, I just think you should be careful not to allow anyone to tell you what you can or can not do. That we have to decide for ourselves. We will not be perfect in everything we do. I am not flawless. But I also know very well what I want to do when I start something. When you occupy the space, you can be sure that I will make every effort to achieve it.
Bollywood has always spoken of couples of actors and directors. All the films you made with Ali Abbas Zafar brought another face to you.
Definitely, he is one of those directors who bring out the best of me. When you ask me about the changes people notice in me, the main reason is the character I play. Ali writes interesting roles for me and I am very lucky to have characters like those of Zero and Bharat. Although I was not Ali's first choice and it was Priyanka (Chopra), I am happy that this is the case. Reading the character of Kumud, I felt that I could do so much and I wanted to immerse myself completely in this character. I just hope that I will continue to play such exciting characters who have enough meat in them.
How has your equation with Salman changed over the years, especially because it also addresses different topics?
The best thing about our collaboration with Salman is that there is no sense in taking it for granted. We do not go into the sets thinking "Dekhte hai". He knows I will come after dedicating 1000% of my time and effort to researching the character and my preparation. He has this confidence in me and I know that when he comes, he will propose something unique. However, I know it, or whatever our equation, when we play on a set, we both think that it is the producer's and the director's place and not a playground. It's not about fun and games, but about professional territory. We come and we do our scenes and rehearsals. That's how we work together. There is no sense in taking something easy or so much acquired. In addition, we both have the same state of mind when it comes to work. There is no public discount. They are no longer ready to give you that leeway. You must bring your heart and soul to a movie. Sometimes, the public is much more tolerant and sweet when you start. We now have the responsibility to provide our audience with something of a certain standard.
