An Innovative Synthesis Strategy Opens the Way to New Drug Compounds

Washington DC, July 5: It turns out that some executives are overrepresented in nature, which makes them particularly attractive to scientists looking for more effective drugs.

One such structure, known as a 5-8-5 carbocyclic ring system, is notoriously difficult to produce using conventional laboratory methods. The researchers were therefore largely unable to tap into its potentially large therapeutic potential.

Researchers at Florida State University have developed an innovative synthesis technique that could unblock these elusive structures, opening the door to a new, cutting-edge world.

In the study, the researchers detailed the modular scheme to produce large quantities of the 5-8-5 ring structure. A synthesis process that was once unusually laborious and resource-intensive, they discovered, can now be streamlined into simple steps.

"The omnipresence of the 5-8-5 ring system in natural products caught our attention." James Frederich, lead author of the study, said, "The 5- 8-5 is composed of two molecular rings with five sides fused to another 8-sided central ring This unique architecture is the core of more than 30 natural products, many of which have useful, potentially therapeutic effects in human cell cultures
