Andhra Pradesh is at the top of the business rankings; Gujarat slips to 5th place

Andhra Pradesh continues to be the best state to do business in the country while neighboring Telegana was ranked second with Haryana in third place, in the World Bank's list of ease of doing business prepared and the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). Gujarat slid further to fifth place in the ease of doing business.

In last year's standings, Andhra Pradesh was leading the standings with Telangana while Gujarat was relegated to third place in 2015. At the other extreme, Meghalaya, Lakshadweep and Arunachal Pradesh are doing nothing to improve the business climate, according to the latest Business Reform Action Plan (BRAP) released on Tuesday.

This time, we learned about industry feedback to see if the reforms have drilled on the ground, said DIPP Secretary Ramesh Abhishek. Next year, the badessment will be done 100% based on industry feedback, he added.

He said that the implementation of the reforms helps to attract domestic and foreign investors. As a result of this exercise, states are competing with each other in improving the business climate. Abhishek added that the Indian economy would reach $ 10 trillion in the coming years and that it is fundamental to make business more competitive.

The other top 10 states are Jharkhand (4), Chhattisgarh (6) and Madhya Pradesh (7), Karnataka (8), Rajasthan (9) and West Bengal (10).

Delhi was ranked 23rd in the list while Punjab was in 20th place, far behind neighboring Haryana. An official statement says that a large number of states have made significant progress in the reforms suggested in the 2017 BRAP.

The badessment is based on a combined score consisting of one proof of reform score based on evidence uploaded by states / UTs. this is based on the response gathered from actual users of the services provided to businesses.

Up to 17 states scored more than 90 percent on reform and 15 scored combined scores of 90 percent or more. States that have achieved 80 percent or more of reforms account for 84 percent of the country's area, 90 percent of the country's population and 79 percent of India's GDP.
