After a long time, Tamil cinema unveiled a state-of-the-art whodunit in Kolaigaran a captivating film skilfully woven by director Andrew Louis. The identity of the criminal and his motives are only revealed to the public a few seconds before the final title. At 110 minutes, the film is fast and engaging.

The film was redone in Tamil under the name of Papanasam (Kamal Haasan in the lead). The basic theme remains the same: an intelligent man with a spirit of inquiry seeking to conceal a murder committed by an innocent person for whom he has a low angle of view.
The senior policeman Karthikeyan (Arjun Sarja) rushes to a crime. the place where he finds the half-burned and mutilated body of a man. The film then cuts into a flat complex where Prabhakaran (Vijay Antony) and Dharani (Ashima Narwal) are neighbors and live in front of each other. They seem to love each other and it is not difficult to imagine that something is getting ready. Meanwhile, the corpse discovered by Karthikeyan investigator turns out to be that of Vamsi, the younger brother of an influential minister who was hounding Dharani in Hyderabad. The film's success lies in its tight scenario. Through his narration, Andrew is able to create the premise and preserve the mystery. In addition to that, the game of cat and mouse between the policeman and the murderer is always a long way ahead and cracked.
There are strong performances of two key players in in Kolaigaran – Arjun Sarja as investigative cop is fabulous while Vijay Antony, who is called a "limited actor", makes a neat work with a service without a future. Newcomer Ashima Narwal is impressive in her first film, while Nbadar is fascinating as a retired policeman. The sound background of Simon King enhances the film. However, the director could have avoided the three songs that not only act as speed-cutters, but that stand out like a sore thumb, especially in a thriller. The directors of the film claim that the songs are a commercial necessity to relieve some tension.
Overall, Kolaigaran is an intelligent investigative thriller that will compel the public to think.
