CARBONDALE • Chancellor of Southern Illinois University Carbondale was diagnosed with cancer

In a statement posted on his blog Thursday, Carlo Montemagno announced that he recently had to limit his schedule public in order to answer back and hip pain, which was initially thought to be caused by cysts.

The cysts were treated, but their cause was identified as a cancer, said Montemagno. He did not specify the type of cancer

"I will not go into details here except to say that we treat him aggressively and I am confident that I will be there for a long time", declared Montemagno. 19659003] Montemagno stated that he "would remain fully engaged as your chancellor and will remain focused on promoting our institution", but noted that Provost Meera Komarraju and his office had resumed work on Chancellor's academic reorganization plan earlier this year

. Health is an extremely personal issue for everyone of us, and I felt that it was important to be transparent with you, our new extended family, about it. My family and I appreciate the support of our many friends and colleagues here at Carbondale and around the world, "said Mr. Montemagno
