MUMBAI: A 60-year-old man who disappeared Monday from BMC's Nair hospital was found dead near his canteen an hour later, police said.

The resident of Hyderabad, Ahsaan Sheikh, was admitted to the hospital Sunday with a suspected fever to be dengue fever. His postmortem report showed hemorrhage in both lungs and other blood findings in tune with dengue infection, hospital officials said.
"Our nurses noticed that the patient was gone and immediately alerted the security officers," said Dr. Ramesh Bharmal, Dean of Nair Hospital. An hour later, security officers found a man unconscious near the stands and carried him to the victim. The man was in plainclothes and not in hospital uniform, "said one official.The efforts to revive him failed, with doctors soon declaring him dead.

Dr. Avinash Supe, director of medical education at BMC, said that an investigation will be conducted by the Dean of the Nair Hospital and the Chief of Medicine on how the patient has escaped.
