In recognition of the month of October dedicated to bad cancer awareness, Augusta Chronicle presents bad cancer survivors in our portraits of 2018 Faces of Survival, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday of October.

In July, Katie DeLaigle celebrated a landmark event with a lifetime trip.

"It was the closest thing to the sky," she said of her vacation on the white-sand beaches and turquoise seas of the Turks and Caicos Islands. His son, Kevin, planned his trip by accompanying him for five years.

Breast cancer was diagnosed in DeLaigle after a routine mammogram revealed a tumor.

"It was really a shock. I've always tried to take good care of myself, "said DeLaigle, a real estate agent for 35 years. "I do not drink and I do not smoke."

DeLaigle is diagnosed with aggressive HER2-positive bad cancer. She had a mastectomy and the doctors removed 30 lymph nodes. DeLaigle followed with three months of chemotherapy and she had radiation treatments. She also underwent reconstructive surgery.

During her treatment, she had difficult days, especially the day after the chemo, but she tried to maintain a positive attitude.

"I tried to stay optimistic. It does not help you to be negative, "she said. "I tried to meditate and read. I did not want to have a pity party. "

She said she was grateful for the medical care she had received and the support she had received. She trusted her family and friends and is still part of a support group for bad cancer.

She said she likes to love being around other women and encouraging them to be survivors and that there is a life after bad cancer.

"Keep fighting and have faith. You're stronger than cancer, "she says, she likes to share her message.

She also found solace in her faith.

DeLaigle wants to encourage women to be vigilant about their health and to have an annual mammogram.
