Fiji, July 17: Fiji has identified hot spots for dengue fever where officials of the World Program to Fight Mosquitoes (WMP) will release Wolbachia mosquitoes Monday spread of dengue, Zika virus and chikungunya diseases. According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), more than 7 million Fijian dollars ($ 3 million) are being spent to drive the project across Fiji, Vanuatu and Kiribati, Xinhua news agency reports. It was not so long ago, genetically modified mosquitoes with defective spermatozoa were developed by scientists to curb Zika.

The first batch of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carrying the bacteria Wolbachia will be released Monday along the roads between the Lami-Nausori corridor on the Queens Road in Fiji. Wolbachia is a natural and safe bacterium that reduces the ability of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to transmit viruses between people. Mosquitoes carrying bacteria breed with wild Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the area, pbading Wolbachia to their offspring.

This is not an emergency measure, but a long-term, self-sustaining solution to dramatically reduce the risk of future outbreaks in high-risk areas. The Wolbachia method of WMP is also compatible with other methods such as insecticides and vaccines. Mosquito-borne diseases are a health problem for people in Fiji. In 2017, about 2,200 cases of dengue fever were reported in the island nation.
