Researchers in the United States have found a gene badociated with the severity of the disease in models of rheumatoid arthritis. The discovery could not only provide a new route of treatment, but also a means of measuring the prognosis of patients diagnosed with autoimmune disease. The gene was discovered during experiments on synovial cells of the inner lining of joints in humans and animals, as well as in animal models of severity of arthritis. This is the first time that the HIP1 gene is involved in the severity of arthritis and in cell invasiveness. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that can cause disability and joint deformity and affects about 1% of the world's population. The drugs currently available to treat rheumatoid arthritis target the body's immune response but increase the risk of immunosuppression and susceptibility to infections such as shingles and pneumonia. The findings were published online in Annals of Rheumatic Diseases .
