With 35 positive cases for the H1N1 virus (flu) and one death due to respiratory illness reported by the district in November, the Ministry of Health has issued an alert against its possible outbreak.

District General Physician, V. Jayasree, told a statement released on Monday that the disease caused by the influenza A virus is spread by air. There have been four H1N1 (flu) deaths in the district this year, and there are 130 positive cases. It spreads quickly when the infected person sneezes or coughs and through his belongings. People with low immunity are at high risk.

Symptoms

Fever, cough, difficulty breathing, body aches, sore throat, cold, chills, fatigue and muscle aches are some of the symptoms. There could be faster heartbeats and lower blood pressure too.

The virus may not survive at atmospheric temperature, but in air-conditioned rooms. Dr. Jayasree said that Oseltamivir tablets, used for treatment, are available at all health centers. Children with symptoms should not be sent to schools. If more than one person has symptoms, one should avoid holding school rallies.
