With the launch of the iOS 12 Apple comes Memoji. This is essentially the animated version of Animoji – you can design your Memoji to look like you and then use it to send silly videos or photos. Keep in mind that for now, you need to have an iPhone X running iOS 12 to use Memoji. Still, you will definitely want to play with it, and here's how.
Find Memoji in the iMessage application drawer and design your mini-me
You can only access Memoji via iMessage. I would like that not to be the case, but that's what we have. You will have to press the Animoji icon (the little monkey). From there you'll want to scroll all the way to the left and hit "New Memoji." This will launch the manufacturer Memoji. The process is relatively explicit. You will be able to choose your skin tone, which ranges from the expected choices to more extraterrestrials, such as blue and pink. You can adjust your hairstyle, eye color, shape of the head, nose and lips. You can get more personal by choosing freckles, facial hair, ear curls, headwear and glbades. I will say as a man who wears glbades, the options are not great. But you should be able to choose something relatively similar to what you are wearing now, and if not, well, I hope that Apple will give you more to choose from in a future update.
Spam your friends with your Memoji
Now that you have made your Memoji, you can start using it to send messages. Back in the Animoji app in iMessage, you can swipe your Memoji and start making funny faces. It will reflect your actions. Tap the red save button once you are ready to make real content. You have 30 seconds to record what you want. You can view this video and send it directly to iMessage. You can still send these messages to your friends using Android; it'll just send as a video file. You can still save this file once you have sent it, so if you only want to post this video somewhere else, you should only send it to yourself and then save it.
Maybe 30 seconds are not long enough for you. If that's the case, tap the camera icon in iMessage. This will open the camera application, and from there you can choose the mode of the camera you want to use. After sliding to the video, you will notice a small star in the lower left corner. Supports. This brings a few different effects options, including Memoji. Press that monkey again, flip the camera over and slide your finger on the Memoji you want to use. Exit this menu by pressing the small "x" in the right corner. Your Memoji will appear on your face (as long as you have switched to your front camera) and you will be able to start recording.
You can still layer more effects, like filters, text and shapes. It's a lot to handle visually, but if it suits you, go for it. Once the recording is done, you can press done and send this video to iMessage. You will have to send it to save it, which is boring, but you can at least share it on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or anywhere else you feel your Memoji should live.
How much Memoji is too much Memoji?
Right now, go with Memoji. Spam your friends. Enjoy. I think we'll get fed up with it, but I'm having fun playing with my Memoji. I hope you too. You will look like a monster making funny faces on your phone and / or talking to him, but it's okay. We are in 2018 and we can not be ashamed.
