"I did as many movies as Kamal Haasan but he's more popular, "Pleasant Charuhasan as we sit down to chat. "I may have won the Tabarana Kathe National Award in 1986, but I do not have the patience to watch a movie for two and a half hours. In fact, I have not looked at it for 20 years. After becoming a renowned lawyer, cinema has never been my priority, "smiled Charuhasan, whose Dha Dha 87 was published this month.
Excerpts from a conversation:
Let's start with your latest release, Dha Dha 87, which was promoted as a spiritual sequel to Kamal Haasan-starrer Sathya (1988) Why does not the film focus more on your character?
To be honest I did not watch Sathya and I do not know if I'll do it, I did not like doing Dha Dha 87, but the director Vijay Sri pressured me that he was an old gangster, it was You need to know that an 87-year-old man who goes to the grave is not important to the story.I did everything I could.I was bedridden for a moment .. I suppose that there was also a parallel story about two young people.
During a career of three decades, you have turned films in the four southern languages, besides realizing Puthiya Sangamam and IPC 512.
When Mahendran offered me Uthiripookkal, I told him that I knew nothing about the craft. He said that's exactly what he was looking for. (Smiles) I'm not a good actor. I know what I can do I was a lawyer turned actor by accident and I'm not someone who takes the movies seriously. But I had the chance to make fantastic movies, like Uthiripookkal, Tabarana Kathe and Kubi Matthu Iyala. I would say that I have been better recognized in other states because they have provided me with good roles. You will not believe it, Mrinal Sen had appreciated my work. Once I remember, he met Mani (Ratnam) and inquired about me.
In hindsight, do you think you could have made more films?
Not at all I have zero regret. I ventured into movies at the age of fifty and I won the national award at 57 years old. You see, the quality of the actor and the popularity do not go together. Sivaji Ganesan, in my opinion, was the best actor in Tamil Nadu, but MG Ramachandran was more successful. Sivaji Ganesan, meanwhile, was known worldwide, unlike MGR, whose popularity was dominant in Tamil Nadu. Hollywood knew Sivaji Ganesan. I do not know if they knew MGR.
You told me not to watch movies. But what do you think of cinema made here?
I used to watch two movies a day. In the late 1940s, there were not many theaters in Tamil Nadu. But foreign movies were in the habit of shooting and I had the habit of watching these shows. The movies were just a hobby, not an obsession.
Now everyone follows the same pattern. You ask a filmmaker why he does not do interesting things; he can blame the public. You ask the public why he does not support good films, he may blame the officials. We blame ourselves and we forget to make quality films. 35 years ago, CV Sridhar realized Kalyana Parisu, the story of a love triangle of two sisters in love with a man and how one sacrifices the lover for the sister . I'm throwing a challenge if anyone can make a groundbreaking film like this one today. He was a risk taker, who had an incredible number of fans when MGR and Sivaji Ganesan were at the top of their business. The audience came to the rooms to watch a director 's films. And it was a rather rare scenario. Sridhar has made all kinds of movies – comedies, complicated love stories, love stories breezes, unrequited love – and then K Balachander has arrived. You could say that cinema was a topic of conversation until Sridhar appeared and changed the medium into a visual experience.
You have been in the industry for a long time. Tell us about an aspect that has never stopped marveling you.
Kalyana Parisu and Veerapandiya Kattabomman were released around the same time, namely 1959. While the Gemini Ganesan film was made with a budget of Rs 1 lakh, Sivaji Ganesan's film was shot with 15 Rs lakh. I became a lawyer when Sivaji Ganesan came into the spotlight with Parasakthi. I'm close to both, Sivaji Ganesan and MGR. In 1954, Sivaji's remuneration was Rs 2.5 million and that of MGR nearly. 75 000. In 1967, when the DMK came to power, the salary of MGR was 7 Rs lakh and that of Sivaji remained the same. When MGR made his last film as an actor, his pay was 13 lakh. I saw how crazy the fans were about MGR-Sivaji, and I'm witnessing the same thing about Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan. People still love heroes. They are fighting for these guys. And it's ridiculous. MGR and Sivaji were good friends. So are Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. But I do not understand why their fans argue. When Kamal and Rajini focus on politics, people like Charuhasan will act. Nobody can stop it. (Laughter)
So you are opposed to actors becoming politicians,
No. Actors can be politicians. But they should not be elected to power simply because they are actors. Unfortunately, this has been the case – directly from MGR. If MGR was not an actor, he would not have become the chief minister. But fortunately, he was a good human being. He was a man with a heart of gold, who always thought of people's well-being. MGR sacrificed so much in his life for what he later became.
What do you think of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan's entry into politics?
Kamal Haasan can not succeed as a politician and will not become the chief minister. Good intentions alone do not determine the voting banks. Who you are and where you come from, is important in politics. Although he is a self-appointed atheist, he comes from the original Brahmin. People will identify him as such, and that will not let him win the election. Hatred against Brahmins is quite understandable. It all boils down to the Brahmanic Patriarchate – all that. Since caste remains a powerful determinant of status, this is not totally surprising.
As for Rajinikanth, let him take the plunge. I am 100% sure that he will not enter politics. He will return soon on parole. I say that because I know him well. Kamal and Rajini can be good actors, but they risk losing even more in the future. Cinema is a risk, politics is riskier. At the beginning of my legal career, I was attracted to Periyar, who was once called his sishyan
You do not mince the words.
Oh, I can speak whatever I want because I will not become the chief minister. (Laughs) On a serious note, being honest and honest has earned the right people in life. Very little like me, and it suits me.
What do you think about women and cinema?
It's not because Tamil Nadu had a woman chief minister that things are better for women. Men still repress women and no man will admit it. My brother Kamal Haasan is married three times and nobody doubts it. Let's say a woman does the same thing: will she be accepted? I do not think so. I do not believe in the marriage system. Well, I was not even 25 years old. Still, I could not get out of the system. I ended up in a marriage, but I warned my future wife that she had a bad husband. (Laughs) Hey, I had the wisdom not to marry me three times like Kamal. Marriage, as a concept, will soon become useless. I am proud to say that my wife is smarter than me. She speaks better English and corrects me whenever I am wrong.
