Scientists discovered that lavender with scented flowers relaxed and could help people relax and could even be a safer alternative to anxiety medications.

The study showed that linalool vaporized lavender should be smelled with the help of mice. not absorbed by the lungs to feel the soothing effects, which could be used to relieve stress and preoperative anxiety disorders.

Mice exhibit fewer signs of anxiety when they smell the fragrant flower.

"In traditional medicine, it's long been believed that odorous compounds derived from plant extracts can relieve anxiety," said co-author, Hideki Kashiwadani, of the University of Kagoshima in Japan.

an alternative to current anxiolytic drugs (relieving anxiety) such as benzodiazepines, known to cause memory problems, bad growth in humans and conbad anomalies.

REUTERS / Eric Gaillard TPX THE IMAGES OF THE DAY – RC1C20C57930 In the study published in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience the researchers tested to see if it is the smell of linalool that is to say the stimulation of olfactory neurons (sensitive to odors) in the nose which trigger relaxation.

They discovered that the odor of linalool had an anxiolytic effect in normal mice.

This contrasts with the injections of benzodiazepines and linalool, whose effects on movement are similar to those of alcohol.

"The results suggest that linalool does not act directly on GABAA receptors such as benzodiazepines but we have to activate them through olfactory neurons in the nose to produce its relaxing effects," Kashiwadani explained.

"Our study also opens the possibility that the relaxation observed in mice fed linalool or receiving an injection of linalool may actually be due to the smell of the compound emitted by their expired breath."

Lavender could also be used pre-operatively or by those who have trouble getting on drugs, said the team.
