Given the precarious family relationships between some of the most powerful couples of Game of Thrones – think of the siblings Cersei and Jaime Lannister, or Jon Snow and his aunt Daenerys Targaryen – questionable romances seem to be part of cultural fabric of Westeros. But George RR Martin had other ideas about character couplings that, in hindsight, seem almost as strange.
The first book in Martin's series A Song of Ice and Fire that inspired the HBO show, was published in 1996, but the author's speech, published in 1993, shows that there have been many revisions during these three years. The most surprising story features Jon Snow and Arya Stark falling in love. Although the revelation of Jon's true filiation last season proves that the two are not in fact half-siblings, but rather cousins, that does not change the fact that they were raised as a brother and sister.
According to Business Insider, an excerpt from Martin's original sketch, worded as follows:
"Arya will be more lenient … until she realizes with terror that". she fell in love with Jon, who is not only his half-brother but a man of the night watch, sworn to celibacy, their pbadion will continue to torment Jon and Arya throughout the trilogy, up to what the last book reveals the secret of Jon's true sonship. "
As bad as this relationship may seem, Martin's original tone
Tyrion Lannister was also to fall in love with Arya, creating a love triangle very improbable between the three. "Exiled, Tyrion will change sides, joining the surviving Starks to shoot his brother and falling head over heels in love with Arya Stark," reads Martin's outline. "His pbadion is, alas, non-reciprocal, but no less intense for that, and it will lead to a mortal rivalry between Tyrion and Jon Snow."
Although many may change from one season to the next Game of Thrones This is a scenario that we do not see happily reborn when the series returns for its last season on April 14, 2019.
