A man was arrested in Calcutta on Saturday for allegedly duping individuals and companies crores of rupees by posing as a marketing agent of the state-owned SAIL steelworks in a portal. business, according to the police.
Following a lawsuit filed by Pasupati Engineering on July 26, the Pondicherry police requested the help of the Criminal Investigation Department of West Bengal to arrest the alleged culprit. and discovered that the suspect Shyam Maitra had been housed in a five-state hotel on EM Bypbad in Calcutta.
With help from the hotel authorities when Maitra was leaving, the CID team arrested him.
Maitra, a resident of Durgapur in West Bengal, posed as a deputy general manager of SAIL in a marketing business portal and had the habit of asking customers to buy the products from SAIL a nd send money to his account via RTGS, said a statement.
It was learned that the company had ordered 35 mt of steel, but the accused told them that SAIL would not provide less than 100 mt. The company made a payment of Rs.58.32 lakh through RTGS, he added.
During the interrogation, the accused acknowledged his guilt. It is suspected that he has been in the business of fooling people by various means since 2014.
