Lithium-ion batteries will replace conventional lead-acid batteries to save weight, increase battery life and reduce environmental pollution caused by the disposal of lead-acid batteries after use. Notably, a lithium-ion battery has a shelf life of 5 years whereas a conventional lead-acid battery would have a shelf life of only one year.

However, lithium-ion batteries are currently 30% more expensive batteries. The cost of lithium-ion batteries, however, should decrease in the coming years. In addition, the Indian government is pushing hard for the reduction of lead-acid batteries in cars. In fact, the government subsidy program for electric and hybrid cars called FAME does not offer any subsidy to cars using lead-acid batteries. At the same time, Maruti's parent company – Suzuki – has established links with Japanese auto parts manufacturer Denso and Japanese electrical components manufacturer Toshiba to set up a battery manufacturing plant in Gujarat. . This installation will not only produce lithium-ion batteries that will replace the lead-acid batteries of conventional Maruti cars, but will also produce batteries for electric cars and scooters. Maruti plans to launch electric cars in 2020, and his group of two-wheelers – Suzuki Motorcycles – plans to launch electric scooters in India at the same time.

The batteries produced by Toshiba- Denso will also be used in hybrid cars that Maruti plans for India. Currently, most cars sold in India use lead-acid batteries made by leading battery suppliers such as Exide, Amaron and Standard Furukawa (SF Sonic). As the world travels to lighter and more durable lithium-ion batteries, the lead-acid battery days seem to be numbered. However, lithium supply could be difficult in the coming years if the entire automotive world moves towards this metal.
