Udhagamandalam: Health officials launched an H1N1 awareness campaign in the village of S Kaikaatty near Kotagiri in the Nilgiris region Sunday after the death of an on-site resident.

Officials said Mohamed Rafeek, 42, from south Kaikaatty, died of the flu at a private hospital in Coimbatore on Saturday night. The victim, who ran a shop in his hometown, may have contracted the virus during travel or tourists, they said. This was the second H1N1 death in the district in the past month.

Dr. H. Ravi Kumar, co-director of health at the Ooty Government Hospital, said his H1N1 awareness program had been underway with local residents since last month. "We could keep the virus away by washing our hands frequently. Hand hygiene is very important.

Ravi Kumar, questioned about Rafeek's case, said he was not treated in time. "He got sick on October 15, but he did not see a doctor until October 22. We can not delay treatment for such a long time."

Stressing that throat pain with fever was the main symptom of H1N1 flu, he said that people with these symptoms should take medication at an early stage. "If it's a normal case of colds and viral fever, it would go away with two doses of antibiotics." If this is not the case, then a blood screening should be done for further treatment. "
