Interpol issued a Red Corner Notice (NCR) against the fugitive jeweler Nirav Modi after the IWC requested it as part of the Rs 13,500 crore fraud on the Punjab National Bank (PNB) . The financial polling agency and the CBI wrote to Interpol to issue the RCM against the jeweler in June. On June 11, the CBI first asked Interpol to issue the MRC. On June 13, he again approached Interpol to issue an MRC against Nishal Modi, a Belgian national, and Parab.
The CBI sent the request to Interpol after filing the first indictment naming Nirav Modi, Nishal and Parab 18 in a special court in Mumbai on May 14.
The CBI filed three FIRs between January and March to probe the PNB fraud. Most of the accused are common to these cases. The fraud was committed in 2011-2017 through the illegal issuance of letters of commitment and foreign letters of credit (FLC).
In its first indictment, the CBI alleged that Nirav Modi, through the intermediary of its companies, embezzled funds in the amount of Rs 6,498.20 crore using fraudulent LoUs issued by the PNB's Brady House branch in Mumbai. Meanwhile, his uncle Mehul Choksi of the Gitanjali group allegedly cheated Rs 7,080.86 crore
Nirav Modi left the country with his family the first week of January, a few weeks before the scam was reported to the IWC.
