The deceased were identified as Sundaravel, originally from a village near Sendurai, in the Ariyalur district, and Rani, from Palakkarai, in the city. They were reported to be in serious condition about three years ago and died on Friday.
According to the Dean of MGMGH, Dr. G Anitha, pneumonia has proven fatal in both cases for two main reasons: one being tuberculosis patients and the other being late start of treatment.
In addition to tuberculosis, Rani would also be suffering from uncontrolled diabetes.
"If a patient has an existing chronic disease, he or she must be more cautious during the monsoon and take all preventive measures to reduce the risk of getting fever," she told YOU.
Physicians reported that people on steroids, TB, cancer and HIV were at high risk of acquiring H1N1, pneumonia and dengue fever.
Apart from this, uncontrolled diabetics, pregnant women, people with heart surgery, etc., also constitute the high-risk group. "The treatment of the high-risk group is relatively difficult compared to other people. People at high risk should receive the necessary vaccines or opt for treatment as soon as possible, "said Dr. G Kamal, director of the Tamil Nadu Research Foundation on Asthmatics and Allergies (TAARF).
