Sahana Shetty, head of the endocrinology department of Kasturba Hospital, said it was essential to raise awareness about the impact of diabetes on the family and to promote the family role in management, care, prevention and education the condition.

She spoke after inaugurating a free diabetes testing and awareness camp on the occasion of World Diabetes Day. The theme of Diabetes Day is "Family and Diabetes".

Dr. Shetty stated that one in two people with diabetes was still undiagnosed. In a study conducted by the International Diabetes Federation, four out of five adults in the world have not correctly identified the warning signs of diabetes. This was a major concern, because of the less severe signs of type 2 diabetes.

Left untreated or untreated, diabetes could lead to life-threatening complications. Diabetes was one of the leading causes of heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and foot amputation.

"Early diagnosis and treatment are the key to preventing or delaying complications. By adopting a healthy lifestyle, 80% of cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented, "said Dr. Shetty.
