Regular consumption of alcohol affects girls more than boys, suggests study

Regular consumption of alcohol, even at moderate levels, can harm young people, especially girls – both their metabolism and gray matter volume, according to a study.

The results showed that drinking may be badociated with changes in metabolite profile that includes reduction of gray matter in the brain – involved in muscle control, sensory perception, self-control.

The risk of these changes was higher for teens who drink heavily. The profile of metabolites changes even among young people who have consumed alcohol at a socially acceptable level, "said Noora Heikkinen of the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, Finland

. – formed in the brain from histamine produced by immune responses – which, in turn, has been badociated with a reduced volume of gray matter in the brain.

"Our results suggest that histamine production increases in the brains of adolescents who drink heavily. This observation may help the development of methods to detect early adverse effects caused by alcohol" , said Heikkinen.

"Eventually, this could also contribute to the development of new treatments to mitigate these adverse effects."

In the study, published in the journal Alcohol, the team badyzed the data on metabolite profiles of young adults who are heavy and light. They also used MRI to measure their gray matter volumes.

The study sheds light on the biological implications of alcohol consumption in adolescents, and could contribute to the development of new treatments, the researchers said
