Sanitary napkins will be exempt from the Goods and Services Tax, Finance Minister Maharashtra said on Saturday after a meeting of the GST Council.
Sanitary napkins are taxed at 12 per cent tax under the one – year GST regime, which has sparked serious criticism from various circles.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 28th meeting of the GST Council, the minister also said that the tax on bamboo was also reduced to 12 percent.
This would mean that there would be no input tax credit available, even though inputs into the production of sanitary napkins are taxed.
It is expected that the board will decide on the revision of the taxation rates on vending machines and lithium-ion batteries, among others.
