Coimbatore: Dr. B Ashokan, Dean of Coimbatore Medical College University Hospital, emphasized the need for patients with flu symptoms to seek treatment early in the infection.

He stated that many patients seek medical care or have been referred by private hospitals at a critical stage, making their recovery time-consuming or difficult.

Addressing reporters in the city Tuesday, Ashokan said the number of fever cases at the hospital had risen from 21 cases last week to 56 cases. Four patients tested positive for the H1N1 virus and four other patients for dengue are treated at the hospital.

"While four patients have tested positive for the H1N1 virus, a few patients suspected of being infected are found in the fever ward. We are waiting for their results, "said an experienced doctor.

Within three days of the onset of symptoms such as sore throat, colds and fever, patients should approach hospitals. "Whether it is H1N1 or not, if people have fever after a sore throat and a severe cold and if the illness lasts about 24 hours, they should see a doctor," said the director of public health, Dr. K Kolandaisamy.
