According to some sources, bone marrow is a tissue containing stem cells that is found in some of the bones. These stem cells can be transformed into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

Certain types of diseases and medical conditions can affect the development of these cells, leading to other health problems. In such cases, a bone marrow transplant is one of the medical procedures that can be undertaken to replace the dysfunctional tissue

. Transplantation is a specialized treatment modality for certain types of blood cancer. Speaking before the FIT, Dr. Rahul Bhargava, director of the hematology and bone marrow transplant department at Fortis Hospital in Shalimar Bagh, explained that the procedure could be of two types: autologous and allogeneic transplantation. The first can be performed in multiple myeloma or lymphoma, and the second in acute leukemia or myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).
