The American-spec Wrangler will have a diesel, too.
Jeep detailed the European-spec variant of the new 2018 Wrangler. The model is largely identical to that sold on our pond side both inside and out with a major exception.
Buyers in Europe can order off-roading with a brand new 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine. It's 200 horsepower at 3,500 rpm and 331 lb-ft of torque at a relatively low 2,000 rpm. It comes with a start-stop system, but Jeep has not yet released the fuel economy figures.
The other engine offered is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that burns gasoline. It's 272 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Jeep does not offer the Pentastar V6 in Europe.
The four-wheel drive is standard, as expected, but the only transmission available is an eight-speed automatic transmission. Jeep abandoned the six-speed manual, a surprise in a market that continues to favor shifts in automatic segments.
Jeep also offered a turbodiesel in the latest generation Wrangler and a majority of buyers have selected it. The company has never stuffed an oil burner into an American Wrangler, but that will soon change. Decision makers remain committed to adding a turbodiesel to the powertrain lineup in the not-too-distant future. It is too early to tell if it will be the same 2.2 liters sold in Europe, however
