The Government states that Kozhikode and Malappuram are free Nipah viruses

KOZHIKODE: The districts of Kozhikode and Malappuram, where 17 people died of Nipah in May, were declared free from the virus by the Kerala government today.

"The decision to declare the two districts free from Nipah virus was taken by the government as no new cases were reported after June 1," said K Shylaja, Minister of Health.

She was speaking at a ceremony to congratulate medical team members, support staff and volunteers who were battling the spread of the virus in the districts.

Sajeesh, husband of Lini Puthuserry, the hospital nurse at Perumbra taluk who died after contracting the virus while he was treating patients, was rewarded for his tireless service aimed at contain the spread of the virus.

Physicians and paramedics were also honored at the ceremony.

This event took place as part of National Physician Day, which has been observed across the country today to recognize physicians' contribution to life and communities.

Collectors from Kozhikode and Malapurram districts, U V Jose and Amit Kumar Meena and G Arunkumar, director of the Virology Institute of Manipal, were also honored on this occasion.

Dr. A S Anoop Kumar of the city's Baby Memorial Hospital received a special award for his efforts to identify and prevent the outbreak of the virus.

On June 11, the government had lifted the travel advisory that it had issued as a result of the virus and had declared that it was safe to travel in any part of the state.

He had raised the high alert in the districts and said that the virus had been controlled and that its spread had been controlled.

The educational institutions, which are scheduled to open on June 1, were reopened on June 11.
