The hypersonic Boeing aircraft could take you from New York to London in 2 hours

5 Amazing stats on Boeing

Boeing wants to fly an airliner capable of transporting customers around the world at five times the speed of sound.

Boeing says the jet could take you anywhere in the world in just one to three hours. With speeds in excess of 3,800 miles per hour, the journey from New York to London, for example, could take 120 minutes. Currently, the trip takes about seven hours.

Boeing (BA), the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world, says that the concept is still in the early stages of development. The key technical challenges will have to be solved even before the company produces a prototype, said Boeing spokeswoman Brianna Jackson on Wednesday.

It is possible that the concept becomes a reality 20 to 30 years old, Jackson said in an e-mail.

"Developments take years to complete, and more with technology that requires additional testing and improvement as we work to understand how it can be integrated into the market," she said.

Boeing is serious about hypersonics and has been testing ultra-fast technology for decades, Jackson said.

And this concept is only one of the many work in progress. Earlier this year, Boeing unveiled a design for a stand-alone hypersonic drone that could be used by the military for surveillance.

His concept of pbadenger aircraft can be used by the US Army even before it hits the commercial market. Jackson, the spokesman, did not give examples of his potential defense goal, but rather emphasized the concept of the drone.

"[W]ed see something like that first before a hypersonic pbadenger concept, "Jackson I said.

Boeing is the hottest stock of the Dow. Again

If the latest Boeing concept is realized, it will easily rank among the fastest vehicles ever driven.

It would be more than twice as fast as the legendary Concorde, which could make transatlantic flights in less than four hours and retire more than ten years ago. It would be even faster than the Lockheed SR-71, which was carrying two air force officers at a speed of 2,193 miles at the time in 1976.

Boeing is not the only player in the game. Other companies, such as Lockheed Martin and Aerion Corporation, are also working on the development of hypersonic aircraft.

And the launch of Elon Musk rockets, SpaceX, plans to use the spacecraft part of its interplanetary transport system to transport people around the globe at unheard-of speeds. Musk said at a space conference last year that he could take pbadengers from New York to Shanghai in just half an hour.
