The high-end Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition has a transparent back that seems to allow you to see the "motherboard" of the phone through the back panel (see the picture at the top of this story). When questioned at the time, the company said the chart is real and is not just a strategically placed sticker to fool your eyes. But we asked the wrong question to Xiaomi, because if the table is real, it is not the one that is actually used to drive the handset. What you look through the transparent back panel is a secondary card that connects to nothing, does nothing, and is included in the phone for your viewing pleasure. Xiaomi is given a lot of trouble to pull the wool over the eyes of consumers.
Meanwhile, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition was launched today in China via a flash sale organized on Xiaomi Mall. The phone is sold in seconds, and will go on sale this Friday, August 3, priced at 3,699 yuan (the equivalent of $ 543 US). This is a very good price for a handset with the Mi 8 Explorer Edition specifications.
The phone has a 6.21-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2248 and an aspect ratio of 18.7: 9. Under the hood is the mobile platform Snapdragon 845 equipped with an octa-core processor and Adreno 630 GPU. 8GB of RAM is inside with 128GB of native storage. Ornating the back of the phone is a dual camera installation (12MP + 12MP), with OIS. The 20 megapixel front camera for selfies includes the AI portrait mode. Keep the lights on is a 3000mAh battery, and Android 8.1 Oreo is pre-installed. Users can unlock the device using either the device's fingerprint reader, or the 3D facial recognition system that is included with the device.
For those in the states who want this particular model, all we can say is that Xiaomi has not yet made its long-awaited American debut.
