INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Eskenazi Hospital confirms it was the victim of a cyberattack on August 4, saying hackers stole personal information. According to Tim Sewell, co-founder of cybersecurity firm Reveal Risk, hospitals are increasingly the target of attacks like this one, and they can prevent saving lives.

“Eskenazi – I read during the original attack … [the hospital] had to divert ambulances, ”Sewell explains. “And there are studies that can show you how much it impacts patient care when you have to turn away, and it takes an extra half hour to get life-saving care.”

Sewell says there have been an increasing number of cyber attacks specifically targeting hospitals in recent years compared to when he was working in the healthcare industry in 2016. As someone who sent his own children to Eskenazi , he said the attack was personal.

“It’s terrible. I mean, why are they targeting hospitals? It’s because they tend to pay because it’s patient care first,” he said.

Eskenazi Hospital says they are operational again and have no intention of paying a hacker. They claim that employee and patient bank and credit card data has not been stolen. Sewell says the best thing businesses can do is prepare and enlist the help of companies like Reveal Risk to defend against cyber attacks.

“I’m here to defend the world from the bad guys,” Sewell said. “And that’s what turns me on in the morning.”
