INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) – The Indianapolis Award has announced a new award designed to recognize the efforts of environmentalists early in their careers. The Emerging Conservationist Award is designed to support environmentalists under the age of 40 “with the talent and determination to make a significant impact on the conservation of an animal species or group of species.”

The Indianapolis Prize is an initiative of the Indianapolis Zoological Society Inc. and is considered the world’s most prestigious award for animal conservation. Like the Indianapolis Prize, the Emerging Conservationist Award will be presented every two years, starting in 2023.

The winner of the Emerging Conservationist Award will receive $ 50,000 to invest in their conservation work. Dr Rob Shumaker, CEO of the Indianapolis Zoological Society, says the award serves as a catalyst to energize the next generation of conservationists.

“The Indianapolis Prize is a prestigious global award that supports the work of environmentalists who have had a significant impact in saving an animal species,” Shumaker said in a press release. “I am delighted that this new award keeps promising young environmentalists active in the field. “

Last week, Dr. Amanda Vincent received the 2021 Indianapolis Prize, and the accompanying $ 250,000, for her work on seahorse conservation. Vincent was announced as the winner in 2020, but the award ceremony was delayed due to the pandemic.

“I am delighted with the announcement of the new Emerging Conservationist Award,” said Vincent. “Knowing that young environmentalists will follow in my footsteps, along with other winners and finalists, gives a deep sense of joy. It’s wonderful to know that these young leaders will continue to advance important work to save species while inspiring a new generation to protect our natural world.

The first Emerging Conservationist Award will be presented at the Indianapolis 2023 Awards Gala on September 30, 2023 in Indy.
