Salvador Perez hit his 46th homerun, breaking Johnny Bench’s record for home runs by one wide receiver in one season, and the Royals beat the Indians, 7-2, on September 20 in the opener of a doubles program.

Perez hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, surpassing the 1970 Bench total for the most by a player who has played at least 75% of his team’s games as wide receiver.

Starting again behind the plate – the durable All-Star saw the designated hitter awhile – Perez led a 1-2 pitch from Triston McKenzie into the left field bleachers, a workout that went through 429 feet. Perez pointed at the sky after crossing the plate and was hugged by several teammates as he entered the dugout.

Perez also tied for the major league lead in homeruns with Torontonian Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Perez leads the majors with 115 RBIs.

Hunter Dozier and Andrew Benintendi also hit two-run homers for the Royals.

Brady Singer (5-10), activated from the pre-game COVID-19 injury list, allowed two runs in seven innings.

Dozier hit his 14th home run in the second and added a single RBI in the fourth. Benintendi hit his 16th home in the fourth.

McKenzie (5-7) allowed all three home runs and allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.

José Ramírez, current AL Player of the Week, posted a two-point single for Cleveland in the fifth.

The seven-inning game was the composition of a July 11 rain at Progressive Field.

BIEBER TIME

RHP Shane Bieber is expected to join the Cleveland rotation this week. Defending AL winner Cy Young has been out since June 13 with a strained shoulder. Bieber pitched 57 shots in 3 1/3 innings for Double-A Akron on Sunday.
