NEW DELHI: India has taken an important step in its Covid vaccination campaign by administering 90.4 crore doses until Saturday evening. More than 72 lakh doses were administered until 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, with Bihar taking the lead in pushing 26.4 lakh jabs in a single day. Maharashtra, which inoculated the second largest number of people, followed Bihar with a dose number of 7.5 lakh.
India’s average daily vaccinations increased dramatically in September to just over 79 lakh doses / day (up from 59.2 lakh / day in August), as more than one in four crore doses were given. separate days, including 2.5 crore on September 17th. The daily average, however, dropped slightly last week (Sept 25-Oct 1) to 68.84 lakh doses / day from 76.14 lakh doses / day during the week of September 18-24.
The coverage of the first dose of the country’s adult population has also increased significantly, reaching around 70% of the estimated 94 million people aged 18 and over. So far, 26% of the adult population has received both doses.
While more than 5.3 crore of unused Covid vaccine doses were available with states and UTs until Saturday morning, officials expect supplies to improve further in the coming weeks, because Zydus Cadila’s ZyCoV-D vaccine is expected to be deployed soon.
