Liputan6.com, Jakarta In the 15th century, European countries were in the midst of an expedition to get necessities, one of them spices. The Portuguese (now Portugal) have become one of the countries that have achieved exhaustion.
The Portuguese are actually foreigners living on foreign lands. Most of the Portuguese region is populated by Arab traders and often hostile tribes. So, inevitably, navigating to a "new world" has become commonplace for them.
Exactly 521 years ago, on July 8, 1497, the Portuguese commanded explorer Vasco da Gama and his team to sail to find a new path to India. and his men made a trip across the west coast of Africa. Crossing the line of the equator, they take the southern path, borrowed by the previous trip of Bartolomeu Dias during the previous 10 years
The cruise of Gama is then the longest, four months to 6,000 miles or 9,656 km. He and the crew do not see the land at all, as long as the eye sees only the ocean.
Six weeks later, the ship da Gama sails at the mouth of the Great Fish River in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. In Africa, da Gama and the team arrived in Mozambique and Mombasa. But their presence has been denied to the inhabitants.
He then moved to Malindi Harbor in Kenya, which is known to have a friendly resident. They are well received in the area. In the city, da Gama found a number of objects believed to come from India.
Because of his curiosity, he looked for people who would help to go to India, especially in the city of Kolkata, southwest of India. After finding the man, da Gama finally left Africa in February 1498.
The trip to India went off without a hitch. Gama arrived at Kapadu on May 20, 1498. The arrival of da Gama was greeted by the local monarch, then occupied by Zamorin.
He had the supply of spices that he was looking for. However, it has not made Gama happy because it turns out that many goods imported from Europe are not in line with the demand of the Indian market.
Finally, Gama decides to return home in August 1498 with a feeling of dissatisfaction. Without the knowledge of seasonal winds in the Indian Ocean, da Gama crossed the African Sea four times longer than the trip before crossing the sea of Africa.
Part of the crew was even attacked by scabies. The final phase trip is relatively smooth. Until early September 1499, da Gama arrived in Portugal with spices and made a profit of 60 times. Although on the one hand, da Gama has failed to establish long-term business cooperation with India.
Another story reports that July 8, 1951 was designated as the 2000th anniversary of Paris, the capital of France. On July 8, 1994, Kim Jong-il continued to lead North Korea's highest leadership after the death of his father, Kim Il-sung.
