Nusa Dua, Bali (ANTARA News) – The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia said the community needed to raise awareness about the issue of emerging infectious diseases and jointly address global health threats .
"It needs the collaboration and integration of all sectors and communities to tackle health threats together, especially for emerging infectious diseases," said chief of the health research and development agency (Siswanto) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health in Nusa Dua, Bali.
He added that nearly two-thirds of emerging infectious diseases were of animal or zoonotic origin.
"In diseases of animal origin, we have an approach called a health. The important thing is that the focus is not just on humans, but on three components: humans, animals and the environment, "he added.
According to Siswanto, these animals can be vectors that transmit diseases (agents) such as mosquitoes or reservoirs capable of transmitting diseases from the same source, such as bats and mice.
"Since this new infectious disease then appears to determine if the disease is of animal origin, a laboratory confirmation must be made," he added.
Therefore, he said, to deal with emerging infectious diseases, it is necessary to strengthen the laboratory nodes.
In Indonesia, the reference laboratory for infection is under the Ministry of Health. Currently, there are 9,930 development laboratories, 188 health unit laboratories, 2,750 hospital laboratories and four major health laboratories and national reference laboratories.
At the 5th meeting Global Health Security Program (GHSA) Held in Nusa Dua, Bali, from 6 to 8 November 2018, one of the global cooperation focuses on biosafety and biosafety.
According to Siswanto, in the case of a new infectious disease, the role of biosafety and biosecurity is very important, especially to those who handle it and biosecurity laboratories so that the virus does not come out. of the laboratory.
