Afghan President puts an end to the truce with the Taliban

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday authorized security forces to continue anti-rebel operations, marking the end of an 18-day ceasefire with the Taliban.

The previous government unilaterally halted anti-Taliban operations in the country. Ghani then unilaterally extended the truce for another 10 days, hoping that this would encourage the rebels to stop the violence and try to end the Afghan war with negotiations.

The Taliban also for the first time in a war that lasted for 17 years and that stopped the attack on the battlefield in the celebration of Eid al-Fitr for 3 days. But the rebels ignored Ghani's call for an extension of the ceasefire and have since resumed deadly attacks against Afghan forces

"The ceasefire is over and the security forces and defense companies are allowed to continue their operations ". The US military has also stopped air strikes that help Afghan forces fight the Taliban when a ceasefire is in effect. Ghani again called the rebel group to come to the negotiating table. [gp/uh]
