SYDNEY – Australian scientists said Wednesday they have developed a blood test device that can detect the first symptoms of melanoma (a type of skin cancer) in the world. The results are a recent medical breakthrough that should save many lives.

"This latest test kit can help doctors detect skin cancer before it spreads to any part of the body." Researcher Pauline Zaenker, a patient who detects early melanoma with this blood test, has a 90-99% chance of survival because the disease can still be treated. The chances of survival will drop to less than 50% if skin cancer has spread throughout the body.

Australian researchers published an Oncotarget medical journal that includes a test report on 105 melanoma patients and 104 healthy people. detected 79 percent of patients with melanoma at an early stage.
