The United Nations is urged to find a political solution for the parties to the conflict in Yemen.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON – British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he would encourage the UN Security Council to take steps to end the Yemeni conflict. It will also try to find a political solution for the parties involved in the conflict in the country.
According to the British Foreign Office, Mr Hunt had agreed with the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, that the time had come for the Security Council to support the process of peace led by the UN. "The measures taken by Britain at the United Nations Security Council will help to achieve this goal, to ensure a full ceasefire when this happens (the ceasefire) will be fully implemented", said the UK Department of Foreign Affairs in a statement released Monday.
The United Kingdom believes that the ceasefire will be fully implemented only if it is supported by a political agreement between the parties to the conflict. Therefore, Hunt tried to realize that.
According to Hunt, recent political developments have created signs to end the Yemeni conflict. "For the first time, there seems to be a window where both parties can be encouraged to sit down, stop the killings and find a political solution, which is the only long-term way out of the disaster." said Hunt last week.
Although he did not specifically mention political developments, Hunt said he would try to find a political solution for the warring parties in Yemen. "The UK will use all its influence to encourage such an approach," he said.
The war in Yemen broke out in 2014, precisely when Houthi rebels launched an attack and took control of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. Then, in 2015, the Saudi-led military coalition intervened to support the internationally recognized government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. A military intervention was also carried out because the Saudi coalition called the Houthis a threat. Riyadh accused the Houthis of having obtained support from Iran.
Since the aggression in Yemen, the Saudi coalition has imposed a partial blockade at the port of Hodeida. The Saudis claim that it was done so that the delivery of weapons to the Iranians by the Iranians be stopped. Nevertheless, Iran has denied providing weapons to the Houthis.
The war in Yemen killed nearly 10,000 people. The conflict forced about 3 million Yemeni residents to flee.
