Government still optimizes coal in energy mix

Jakarta, (ANTARA News) – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is still optimizing the use of coal in the national energy mix.

"We admit that coal is a fast step in the supply of primary energy, but the government does not remain silent about what exists," said ESDM deputy minister, Arcandra Tahar, in a statement. a written statement received by Antara Sunday in Jakarta.

He also stated that he is pursuing various strategic efforts to ensure that the composition of the energy mix remains optimal.

This is consistent with the government's mission to create a clean environment and achieve the goals of national economic growth.

"It is a challenge for this country (Indonesia) as a developing country and not as a developed country. How to create a clean and sustainable environment and achieve the goals of economic growth," he said. Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources.

According to Arcandra, a 5.3% national economic growth can be achieved if the level of national electricity consumption has increased. In the third quarter of 2018, national electricity consumption reached 1,048 kWh / capita. If we continue to follow this trend, this number has evolved very positively since 2014 (804 Kwh / inhabitant), 2015 (918), 2016 (956) and 2017 (1,012).

"It is our job to offer affordable electricity rates so that all citizens can consume electricity," said Arcandra.

Arcandra plans the use of coal in such a way that it does not have a negative impact on the environment. "We are asking the new independent production power to use environmentally friendly technology," he said.

This step is one of the three (3) governments' tactical efforts to improve the composition of the energy mix in the future. Two other efforts are to replace or combine power plant reserves with renewable energy sources (Renewable Energy Sources) and build power plants downstream from energy sources.

The three steps have been taken to reduce production costs much lower. "For example, we have gas for the production of electricity. The gas is indeed cleaner than coal.We recommend that PLN build a plant downstream of the mine so that the transport costs of the plant are closer to those of gas, "said Arcandra.

Arcandra thinks that if this goal is achieved in the composition of the generator's energy mix, the goal of economic growth and creation of clean and sustainable energy will most likely have been achieved.
